A TOAST TO SINGLE MOTHERS

Happy are those children who have a mother to
whom they can pour out their

hearts
and always count on her understanding, and a father in whose

strength
and loyalty they are so confident that they seek his advice

and
help all their lives. Many people long to be such parents to their

children,
and could be, if only they possessed enough wisdom and love.

Eberhard Arnold

I love
this quote by Eberhard Arnold. It adds credence to the role a mother (and
father) plays in the life of a child.

As we
celebrate 2014 mother’s day, I chose to reflect on the contributions of a
single mother.

Being
a mother and the accompanying responsibilities can sometimes be a herculean
task. However, the support of a responsible and loving man makes it less daunting.

Today,
I celebrate women who have taken on the great task of raising a generation
(child) alone. From walking the long miles of nine months without an extra hand
to massage your waist or knead your shoulder; to the labour ward experience
with no one waiting in anticipation or excitement to welcome your baby or say
“you did great my love”. To this and many more, I salute your courage.

For a
lot more that leaves the midwife’s home or clinic with heavy hearts of an
uncertain future or chains of shame for failed societal expectation, your
fears are felt by many others.

To the
single mothers who braved through the night wakes to breast feed and change
diapers or nappies alone, I salute your strength and dedication.

For those
who cried with their child(ren) when  they faced  different bouts of diseases
and accidents, you did great! Bravo!!

I
celebrate your strength to stand up for your child(ren) and teach them to do
same with boldness when peers taunt them about the absence of a father figure.

For the brave hearts that ensured your child(ren) ate well, dressed gorgeously, got
an education and the best of living your peculiar situations allowed, I say Well done!

For those
that had to explain the transformation from being a boy to manhood and taught
their sons to tie a shoe lace, knot a tie and manage their ‘wet dreams’. I duff
my hat for you! Respect!!!

With
great courage you have battled ‘raised eyebrow’ and societal expectations;
raised a son who respects and treat a woman right, and a daughter with great
virtue and character, this edition is dedicated to you.

Even
if you are among those that are abandoned by these same child(ren) you gave all
for or you are constantly blamed for the wrong choices they made in life, you are
still a mother!

Mothers’
day celebration would not be complete without a special mention of your struggles,
victories and contribution to humanity.

To everyone, join me today in celebrating the courage, strength and tenacity of this dogged ladies – THE SINGLE MOTHERS!

I also celebrate my mothers …. You have all shown and proven that being a mother is not only a responsibility but a worthy calling. I am encouraged everyday to stand tall and give thanks to God for the opportunity of also being a mother.

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY!!
