appreciation bereavement grief loss pain teacher tears

GONE LIKE A WIND 11 ….. a little appreciation goes a long way!

“Oh my God!” I exclaimed as I quickly parked the car by the roadside.  The full impact of the news I had just received over the phone had hit home and very hard too. The tears flowed freely and I could feel the ache in my heart mounting.

I received a text message in the early hours of this morning that my children’s school will not open as one of the teachers had passed on. So on my way to work I decided to pass on the information to a fellow  mother I do school ‘runs’ with. She reconfirmed the information and mentioned the name of the deceased staff. Suddenly, my legs became weak and my flood gate gave way. The tears flowed freely as I drove to work and kept flowing as I remembered the personal impact the deceased had made on my daughter and I.

When my four years old daughter began learning addition, subtraction and later multiplication, I wondered the techniques her teacher used. For in a short while, she was able to do her assignments without supervision.

And when she began reading sentences made up of two-lettered words, my joy knew no bound and my heart swelled with pride. I appreciated the effort of her teacher who only through wisdom, dedication, experience and expertise could achieve such a feat! This is in comparison to how tasking I feel the job is when I attempt teaching and guiding her through her assignments.
Truthfully, I have lost my patience severally while teaching her and would resolve to let her be with the consolation that the teacher will guide her through the difficult areas.

I fondly recall the numerous times she gave firm assurance of growth and progress when I expressed fear or worry; or of the few times she has in kind words called my attention to an issue that requires keen attention.

In today’s world, we can never raise a child completely in all aspect without the help of a TEACHER, nanny or caregiver.

May I remind and encourage you to always appreciate in words and deeds these ‘helps’ who have in no small measure ease the burden of raising well groomed and knowledgeable children, and a great generation!

With a heavy heart today, I mourn the demise of my daughter’s class teacher – Mrs Funmilayo Johnson.

May God that “gives beauty for ashes, strength for fear, gladness for mourning and peace for despair”, console her family, friends and the school at this time.

May God bless every teacher who has sacrificially given their best to raise a child. Praying that the family of the deceased and the school experience divine comfort at this time of grief.

I still remember my primary 1 teacher fondly. Its probably because it was the only class I came 1st in 2 terms consecutively. Good teachers are always a gift. Ronks D
