LAGOS TRAFFIC

The traffic today was bad. It looked like all
the cars and trailers in Lagos had a convention in Apapa. The side streets and
back roads were filled with cars. Leaving Apapa in 1 hour was simply hopeless.

As I sat in that traffic, my mind was on how to
get home early enough to make dinner and help out with other chores. Honestly,
on days like this, all I desire is to do is get home, shower and sleep (heavy
traffic has a way of draining my appetite) but nay! Mummy duties calls!

I watched many drivers show their driving prowess
– driving against the on coming traffic with speed (one way). To this, I wondered
where the LASTMA officials that patrol and often lurk around the corners of
these roads were. Often times, these men help  restore order ad mist chaos
on traffic laden days.

I was tempted to join in the madness of driving
‘one way’, but the thought of needless excuses when caught by the LASTMA officials
drained the idea off my mind. I wished I was heavily pregnant, so I would used
the “am in labour” excuse (yes o! My mind really went that far) . Well,
when I was heavily pregnant with my second child, I often had this ‘false’ contraction whenever I drove. ‘False’
because it never led to ‘labour’ in spite of my fears. So I surmised that my
baby was just another ‘James Bond’ who loves action.

So with no tangible excuse to give if caught, I
silently suffered the ‘crawling’ traffic till I got to the point where the road
expanded to three lanes. There I drove like one with a bladder full of urine,
looking for an opportunity to discharge.

Chai! Lagos traffic has almost drained the ‘lady’
driver in me. I know am not alone in this. Most Danfo buses (Yellow buses) are
always eager to bully or horn (hoot) a female driver off the road. And am not
one to give in to such lame show of man-power, especially on days like today. “me sef wan reach house fast” *winks*

My conclusion is, when you are in Rome behave
like a Roman. I am not an advocate of display of insanity on the road. I am a
mother and a role model, so I live by the rule. Traffic inclusive.

But when the need arises – SHINE YA EYES o!

@Anonymous 2:41, ferry is a very good option. Please implore lagos state government to create 'ferry landing point' for those leaving on the main land.

In fact I suggest Makoko area. lol!
