These days, achieving a healthy work-life balance can seem like an impossibility. There always seem to be a thousand and one task seeking for urgent and important attention.
Your career (work) is important, so is your personal life. You don’t want your work to overshadow your life and vice-versa. Attempting to find a balance between these two can be somewhat difficult.
The tips below have helped me achieve a bit of harmony in my work and personal life.
The first is to limit time-wasting activities and people. Identify what is very important and what’s not in your life. This differs for different persons, so make sure it reflects your personality.
Doing this will make it easier for you to know how much time/attention you give to activities, people. If it means spending less or no time on blogs, do so. If it means you canceling dates with people who add no value to you. Focus on the people and activities that reward you the most. It may seem selfish but it’s not.
The second is to let go of Perfectionism. Being perfect is a myth. While being hardworking is encouraged, it is also good to know that professionalism is a myth. No human is perfect. Realize this and work by it. Strive for excellence, not perfection. That is healthy.
The third is to exercise and meditate daily. Even when life gets busy, we still do make out time for very important things such as eating, sleeping, bathing and all. Exercising is also very important in our daily activities. It is a stress reducer. It’s recommended that you dedicate a few minutes to self-care every day, whether it’s exercise, meditation, or yoga. Take a deep breath. Recite positive affirmations.
The last is to start small. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so yeah to achieve this harmony, you have to start small, be intentional and consistent about it too. Don’t just make resolutions and dump them. Schedule time for a retreat and have a review to ascertain if you are doing better if you are keeping up with your resolutions.
Already said that attaining harmony in your work and personal life is a gradual process, take it a day at a time. I believe that these tips would be helpful in your journey of achieving that.
